About Us

Stephanie Barajas

I am currently a senior in high school who has always had a passion for STEM. I have decided to major in Biomedical Engineering and pursue a career in Cardiology. Being a Hispanic invested in STEM, I noticed that my African-American, Latino, and Native American peers are mostly leaning towards vocational careers and majoring in Arts and English. When I asked why, they mostly responded with a negative view towards STEM, exclaiming STEM subjects are too difficult. I decided to become engaged in this project to make a difference by showing my fellow classmates and other minority students the wonders of STEM.

Growing up, STEM programs didn't exist in my neighborhood; and I wasn't exposed to the wonders of computer science until high school. To this day, many minority-filled communities struggle with having access to STEM based programs. That is an injustice to the minorities in our society. This cause has driven me to want to make a difference in the world by inspiring others like me to have a passion for STEM.

I am currently a junior in highschool and living in Chicago. There are obvious differences between differnt parts of the city, and I have always been against that. I believe STEM is the answer to changing that. With more minorites in STEM, negative norms will be reduced.
