What is spaying/neutering?

A spay is a surgical procedure to remove a female animal's reproductive organs. This surgery makes it impossible for this specific animal to reproduce. A nueter is a surgical procedure for male animals to remove the animals testicles, making it impossible to reproduce. These surgies are done by a trained veterinatian while the animals are under general anesthesia. With general anethesia, the animal will not feel any pain during the surgery. This surgery can be done as soon as eight-weeks-old. It is important to get this surgery done as soon as possible since at a very young age animals can begin to reproduce.

Importance

Spaying and neuturing animals can be a life saver. Overpopulation in kennels is closely linked to owners not spaying or nuetering their pets. The more animals that are reproducing, can cause shelters to lose space. If an animal reproduces, there is a large likelyhood that the owner cannot keep all the animals babies. These babies that cannot stay in the owners home, will end up in a shelter. The huge importance of spaying and nuetering is making sure that we can decrease the number of animals that are being put into shelters.

Benefits

Not only does spaying and nuetering pets help with controling the kennels overpopulation, but it can also have a multitude of benefits to the owner and the pet. Spaying females can greatly decrease the odds of breast cancer or uterine infections. For males, it can greast;y decrease the possiblities of testicular cancer. Also, spaying/nuetering causes a major decrease in the natural urge to mate. Decreasing this urge can make animals to become more content with their family. Finally, spaying/nuetering will eliminate any possiblity of an animal reproducing. This will decrease the medical/food costs because the owner will not need to pay for more food for the multitude of babies.
